ASUU strike called off, lecturers ordered to resume Friday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Thursday agreed to suspend their strike, which has lasted for three months.

This comes after ASUU signed all agreements with the Federal Government, following a conciliatory meeting in Abuja.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, represented the Federal Government, while the lecturers were represented by the union’s president, Biodun Ogunyemi.

According to Ngige, both parties unanimously resolved the eight contentious issues that had prolonged the strike.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, Ogunyemi said: “On Sunday, November 4, 2018, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) resumed its strike action, which was conditionally suspended on 14th September, 2017.

“The action of 2017 was suspended following the signing of a memorandum of action (MoA) in which the federal government of Nigeria (FGN) promised to address the contentious issues within a timeline that was to end in October 2017.

“While announcing the suspension of the nationwide action, however, our union made it categorically clear that ASUU will not hesitate to review its position should government renege on the signed Memorandum of Action.

“Predictably, Government implemented the MoA in the breach, thereby forcing ASUU to resume the suspended strike action. Comrades and compatriots, as we have always argued, the last thing ASUU members love doing is to cause disruption in smooth intellectual engagements with colleagues, friends and students right on our university

campuses. This has nothing to do with the dubious advertorial of non-disruption of academic calendar by proprietors and administrators of some cash-and-carry universities and other self-styled enemies of ASUU.

“Rather, it is about deep-seated pains members of the Union undergo to prevent strike actions and the equally painful consequences strike situations bring to all who are genuinely averse to the mercantile disposition to university education.

ASUU’s official Twitter handle also confirmed that lecturers are to resume on Friday (tommorow).

“The NEC has decided that the STRIKE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED.

“Academic activities resume tomorrow,” the union quoted its president as saying in a tweet.

Confusion Arise As Ghost Of Recently Buried Man Was Seen Leaving Ikoyi Cemetery In Lagos

The ghost of one late Mr Paul Johnson, literally wasn’t going to rest in peace as it’s being alleged that he was caught on a CCTV camera outside Ikoyi Crescent Cemetery, Lagos.
The guards on duty had gone into the camera room to review the footage from the previous night, when one of them noticed the movement.
According to reports, the guards thought it was the wind at first, not until noticeable movement further into the footage changed their minds.
The only way they knew it was the body that had recently been buried, was because the burial plot itself was in a state of chaos.
The widow and children of Late Mr Paul-Johnson also confirmed seeing their late husband and father at home.
According to them, he was annoyed at the way they were being mistreated by extended family members who had appropriated his property upon his death.

He probably was back to rectify the wrongs done to his nuclear family.

A right-wing Indian woman who shot an effigy of independence hero Mahatma Gandhi with an air pistol to mark his assassination some seven decades ago has been arrested, police said Wednesday.
Pooja Shakun Pandey was filmed shooting the effigy at an event by a far-right Hindu group on Friday — the 71st anniversary of Gandhi’s death. The video sparked anger after going viral online.
Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic angered by what he saw as Gandhi’s pandering to Muslims and by the partition of India after independence.
Some present chanted Godse’s name and people took turns firing at the effigy, which had a balloon inside that burst with red liquid resembling blood. It was then set on fire.
The event took place in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh and was organised by right-wing group Hindu Mahasabha, the same organisation to which Gandhi’s killer was linked.
Pandey — a senior figure in the group and a former lecturer — was arrested on Tuesday on charges of stoking violence and rioting, a local police officer told AFP.
She was taken before a court and a judge remanded her in custody, the officer said.
Thirteen others from Hindu Mahasabha involved in the recreation of the killing, including her husband, have either been arrested or are on the run.
The organisation observes the anniversary of Gandhi’s assassination as “Bravery Day” and organises public events to glorify Godse, who was hanged with a co-conspirator in 1949.
Gandhi’s death led to nationwide outrage against the far-right group, pushing it to the fringes of Indian politics for many decades.
But the election of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 has emboldened the organisation to celebrate Godse’s ideology.

Saraki Accuses Buhari’s Government Of Increasing Unemployment

By  -  - Update ]
The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of increasing the unemployment rate in the country.
While addressing youths in Kwara State, Saraki blamed the unemployment problem on the alleged lack of economic knowledge by the current administration.
“It is only the President that knows how to create jobs that our youths want. The government cannot give all the youths jobs. How do youths get jobs all over the world?
“They get jobs because the government will allow people to set up businesses, people will set up factories, people that want to be entrepreneurs will be entrepreneurs. It’s not by the government.
“So anywhere that the President will have to bring people in, jobs will be created. For three and the half years, the highest number that we have seen since Nigeria started, of people that have not got jobs is under this government because ‘dem no sabi am’,” he said on Tuesday.
Saraki, who is also the Director General of the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on the youths to vote massively for the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to Senate President, Atiku can deliver jobs to the teeming employed Nigerians if given the opportunity in the February 16 presidential election.
“You can only give what you know. Let us move out and vote for Atiku. Atiku will bring jobs. When there is a job, our youths will get jobs. Without that, there will be no jobs for you.
“Please our youths, don’t make mistake. And in Kwara, I want to vote en masse for Atiku. I don’t want 55-45 or 60-40 or 65-35,” he added.
